About this event

Join the Brass Band of the Treasure Valley for an evening of bold brass, beautiful melodies, and music that ranges from intimate to absolutely enormous.

Our spring concert brings together traditional brass band favorites, cinematic color, lyrical solos, and a few pieces that give the percussion section permission to make some noise.

The evening builds to one of the great finales in orchestral music, The Pines of the Appian Way from Ottorino Respighi’s Pines of Rome. It starts in the distance and keeps growing until, well, you’ll know when we get there.

No tuxedo required. No prior knowledge of brass bands necessary. Just come listen.

The Program

Fanfare for the Common Man
Aaron Copland, arr. for brass band
A bold opening with brass and percussion doing exactly what brass and percussion were invented to do.

The Contestor
T. J. Powell
A classic brass band march with plenty of energy and just enough swagger.

Shenandoah
Traditional, arr. Stephen Bulla
A warm, spacious setting of one of America’s most enduring melodies.

Concertino for Flugelhorn
William Himes
Featuring our principal flugelhorn soloist.

Selections from West Side Story
Leonard Bernstein, arr. for brass band
Familiar melodies, sharp rhythms, and plenty for the band to sink its teeth into.

Intermission

Olympic Fanfare and Theme
John Williams, arr. for brass band
Because sometimes subtlety is overrated.

Irish Tune from County Derry
Percy Grainger
A rich brass setting of the melody better known as Danny Boy.

Fire in the Blood
Paul Lovatt-Cooper
Contemporary brass band writing with drive, color, and a little controlled chaos.

Nimrod from Enigma Variations
Edward Elgar, arr. for brass band
Quiet, noble, and one of those pieces that reminds you brass instruments can whisper too.

Finale: The Pines of the Appian Way
from Pines of Rome
Ottorino Respighi, arr. for brass band
The Roman army approaches from the distance, grows steadily closer, and ends the evening with approximately all the brass.

About the Concert

This program is built around the incredible range of the modern brass band. You’ll hear everything from delicate solo playing to full-band fanfares, marches, film-inspired music, hymnal warmth, and a finale designed to make an auditorium feel slightly too small.

Whether you already love brass band music or aren’t entirely sure what a euphonium is, you’re invited.

Spoiler: By the end of the concert, you’ll probably have a favorite euphonium player.
